Lifestream Family Medicine

SRQ BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

“Your Family is Our Priority”

I am very excited to share with you a brand new family clinic in Lakewood Ranch and wonderful Dr. Saska Sookra Winslow. I met Dr. Winslow and spoke with her about her clinic about 6 months ago. What I remember the most from that first conversation is her warmth and kindness and the way she spoke about her passion and the love of helping her patients.

Dr. Winslow has had the vision to open a clinic that helps bring health, hope, and healing to her patients. She brings to LWR high quality, personalized, and affordable healthcare for families. LifeStream Family Medicine offers an innovative yet simple model of care – Direct Primary Care.

With LifeStream Family Medicine, you can receive primary care for a low monthly fee without copays or hurried visits. The clinic also takes select insurances such as Medicare, Aetna, and Cigna, with other like Tricare still pending. It is a family, locally, and Christian-owned healthcare provider dedicated to whole-person care.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Dr. Winslow: I was inspired to start my own business after working for multiple corporate groups for almost 11 years, realizing that I would never quite have the freedom to practice medicine on my own terms working for someone else.

What inspires your work and what sets you apart from everyone else?

Dr. Winslow: What inspires my work is my faith in Christ as the Great Physician. Christ always took the time to minister, to extend a caring touch and the ministry of healing for those in need. And what also inspires me are other physicians who have taken the path as independent physicians – not an easy task in the current times. What sets me apart from other primary care offices – we are a small office with a personal touch. Your names and family are remembered and we treat you as we treat our own family. I am also a physician of faith and being able to pray with my patients should they desire, is a blessing for both my patients and myself.

What is your background and how did you develop the skills to start your business?

Dr. Winslow: I am a Board certified Family Physician. I studied at Loma Linda University in California and graduated in 2004 and did my family medicine residency at Florida Hospital, now named Advent Health in Orlando Florida, finishing in 2007. I also completed my Bachelor’s of Science in Biology at the University of South Florida. As far as business training, I am learning as I go, being part of a couple of private practice physicians networks, and being connected to local groups such as the Chamber of Commerce.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Dr. Winslow: My biggest challenge has been getting the practice ready to open for business – the business start-up for a medical practice is so detailed with so many working parts. It requires multi-tasking to the highest degree to ensure all parts are in order.

What has been your biggest success to date?

Dr. Winslow: My biggest success has been getting this practice ready for opening as well.

Which small businesses are you inspired by?

Dr. Winslow: The small business that I am inspired by is one that is close to my heart and my own practice and that is the Animal Health Clinic here in Lakewood Ranch. It is owned by my parents Neville and Susan Sookra. They have been in practice for the past 20 years and through the different challenges they have faced, their courage, their faith, and their love for people and pets is an example of how I want to practice as well.

What’s your best advice for someone who wants to start her own creative business?

Dr. Winslow: My best advice for someone who wants to start their own creative business is first to write your vision down. In the Bible, there is a saying without vision, the people perish. Writing down what are you looking to do and then breaking it down into a solid business plan is so important.

What do you love the most about Sarasota?

Dr. Winslow: I love as everyone does, the weather – being able to walk out in your flip flops and shorts in November and love the beaches and sunsets.

Favorite restaurants in town

Dr. Winslow: I would have to say that I am a big fan of Thai Wasabi on SR 64 in Bradenton. I love their Thai curries and Thai iced teas!

What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

Dr. Winslow: Fun fact about me – I have yet to meet someone with my first name Saska which is a variation of the Russian name Sascha. I am originally from the island of Trinidad and emigrated to Canada before moving to the US.

Today’s post seems to be more than fitting because, on June 1, 2020, this brand new clinic officially opens the door to their patients in Lakewood Ranch. Wishing a lot of success to Dr. Winslow and her nurse, Amanda!

If you just moved to LWR area or you are looking for a new medical care, I would totally give Dr. Saska Winslow a call.
