An Interview with Kim Poonai, the owner of VITA AESTHETICS
Medical spas are the perfect combination of a day spa and a cosmetic medical center! They have the benefits of the relaxing environment and procedures of a day spa, but with additional aesthetic medical services that are non-surgical. This often includes dermal fillings, wrinkle relaxers, and a few other medical-grade skincare procedures.
They’ve become very popular over the years, and many clinics have opened up all over to meet the rising demand- Sarasota is no exception! I recently had the chance to meet and work with Kim Poonai, and I was in awe of her professionalism and work ethics. So when the Sarasota Herald Tribune’s Readers Choice Awards was announced last week, she and her med spa, Vita Aesthetics won and was named Sarasota’s “Best Medical Spa”. Congratulations, Kim!

What inspired you to start your own business in Sarasota?
I’ve always been interested in Aesthetics and wanted to become my own boss so I decided to start my own practice in 2020.
What inspires your work and what sets you apart from everyone else?
I love building long-term relationships with my clients. I extend my appointments so that I have time to educate and ensure that my clients have the best care.
What has been your biggest success to date?
I won “Best Medical Spa” in Sarasota by the Herald Tribune. (Check out the heartfelt FB announcement here!)
What has been your biggest challenge?
Learning the business aspect of my practice. I don’t have a business background and it has definitely been a learning curve for me.
If you could go back to the beginning knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently?
I wouldn’t have done anything differently. I feel like I am right where I need to be and have learned so much over the years.
What’s your best advice for someone who wants to start her own creative business?
Just do it! You must put 100% in to succeed. Find a mentor.
What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?
I am a Florida native. You don’t meet many of us in Sarasota.
What do you love the most about Sarasota?
The weather and beaches.
If I had an extra $100,000, I would….
Expand my business and hire an employee.

How do you define success?
I view success as a journey, not a destination. At the early stage of my business, every milestone, big or small allowed me to develop stronger skills and techniques to enhance my performance. Each conference and training I attend allows me to improve my skill set, ultimately allowing me to be a better injector for my clients.
What’s the next step for your business?
I hope to expand to a larger location by the end of the year. I plan to hire an employee once my new location is found.
